Coloured pencils are straightforward: no preparation, no drying, no spills – they are ready to use immediately.
Coloured areas can be created by drawing closely spaced lines (hatching). The intensity of the colour transferred to the paper can be varied by changing the pressure applied.
Coloured pencils are available in up to 150 colours. The leads are oil- or wax-based, water-soluble or waterproof, thick jumbo leads for children or highly pigmented for artists.
Coloured pencils are suitable for many painting techniques: depending on the lead, soft colour gradients, layering, mixing techniques or watercolour effects (with water-soluble pencils) are possible.
For children, break-resistant leads, a child-friendly ergonomic shape and washable colours are particularly important.
